  • Victorians at Spring Nationals

A relatively small contingent of Victorian players travelled to Sydney for the 2022 Spring Nationals, one of the major Gold Point events on the national calendar.

VBA Vice-President Jenny Thompson paired with Canberra expert David Hoffman to finish in an extremely fine second place in the Dick Cummings, the Open pairs event that usually features one of the best pairs fields of the year. Congratulations to Jenny on this fantastic result. In the Restricted event, Matthew Tiplady paired with his partner from Adelaide to finish a very creditable fifth.

The man of the year, James Coutts, as we have become accustomed to seeing, had an amazing tournament once again, playing with regular partner Liam Milne (NSW) in the Open Teams event with Australian representative Andy Hung who was paired with Shane Harrison. Their team topped the arduous qualifying and then comfortably won the playoff between the top four qualifiers. James then went on to win the Mixed Teams, playing with his life partner Ellena Moscovsky, in a team with ex Victorian Ella Jacob and New Zealand’s Michael Whibley.

The incredible year James is enjoying sees him firmly in contention for the McCutcheon Trophy, the award given to the player who accrues the most masterpoints for the year and very much regarded as “player of the year” as a result.
