  • Victorians Star in Launceston

The Tasmanian Festival of Bridge was held last weekend and Victorians featured prominently in the results. Somewhat unusually, all the events at this Gold Point carnival are for pairs, with no teams events taking place.

The Roger Penny Senior Swiss Pairs was won by our own Neil Ewart in combination with Canberra-based Ian Robinson. Warm congratulations to Neil on this prestigious victory. Close behind in second were two of our best- known Victorian expert players, Andrew Mill and Simon Hinge, while Victorian congress stalwarts Peter Karol and Joanne Crockford punched above their weight to come a very creditable seventh.

In the Australian Mixed Pairs championship, VBA regulars Leigh Gold and Kitty Muntz were victorious in a terrific result, continuing their excellent record in interstate events. Alistair Lowe and Susie Groves, with just over 600 combined master points, did very well to finish 9th.

Finally, in the principal event, the TBIB Australian Swiss Pairs, Jamie Ebery and Kim Frazer ended up in a fine  7th position after being in the top three for most of the event, ahead of Neil Ewart and Ian Robinson (8th) and Justin Mill and Philip Markey (S.A.) (9th).

Congratulations to all the Victorian participants on an excellent showing over the weekend.

    – Christopher Leach.
