Promoting BRIDGE within Victoria
Fostering interest in the game
Kim Frazer’s book Gaining the Mental Edge at Bridge has joined 5 other books on the short list of the International Bridge Press Association’s 2020 Book of The Year
Kim joins some of the most well known names in bridge in this years nominations including David Bird/Larry Cohen, Mike Lawrence, Krzysztof Martens/Marek Wojcicki, Mats Niland and Nicolas Hammond.
Bridge players spend countless hours working on bidding conventions and card play techniques, yet give little attention to the mental side of the game. Maintaining focus and concentration, dealing with nerves, and other issues are largely ignored.
Many of you will know that Kim is an Olympian and winner of gold medals at three consecutive Commonwealth Games in shooting. In her book she explains how she has adapted the mental techniques that brought her success in shooting and explains in easily-understood terms how to use these at the bridge table.
Kims book has achieved wide recognition (Ron Klinger says of it “I am anxious to try out these new ideas and incorporate them as part of my regular regime. I can’t wait for my next bridge game! I would just like to bar all of my regular opponents from reading this book.”) and has been featured in an episode on John McAllister’s podcast The Setting Trick. John McAllister is an American Bridge player who travels the world playing bridge (he is a regular participant at the Gold Coast) and on The Setting Trick he interviews world renowned players. He contacted Kim earlier in the year about her book and you can hear the podcast here https://www.thesettingtrick.com/episode-details-1 as well as access some amazing other podcasts with world bridge champions.
This Award has been won twice in recent years by Australians. In 2013 Victorian Bill Jacobs won the award for his book Fantunes Revealed and in 2017 Sartaj Hans (NSW) won for his book Battling the Best
We wish Kim every success when the awards are announced.
