  • Victorian Representative Teams – Pathways to Qualifications

The Australian National Championships are being held in Perth this year.   The ANC Interstate teams start Monday 10th July with the finals being completed on Friday 14th July.

Victoria will be sending an Open, Womens, Seniors and Youth team to represent our state.

    Selection details for each team:

    Open Team

There are 3 avenues to qualify for the playoff for the Open Team:

    They are:

    • The 2022 Pennant State Championship Team (won by the Newlands Team in November 2022)
    • Two VQP Teams (VQP’s are awarded at congresses during 2022)
    • Victorian Open Butler Championship Team

The list of VQP’s awarded in 2022 and other information regarding the VQP System can be found here.   There is a link on the page to VQP’s 2022 that shows the player totals of VQP’s earned for the 2022 year.  The VQP teams who wish to nominate should notify the Match & Tournament Committee ([email protected]) by 5pm on Friday 24th March 2023.

The Victorian Open Butler Championship Team is selected via a preliminary and final stage.  Representatives from the three Victorian state regions gain a place in the final.  Other pairs can qualify by playing at the Victorian Bridge Centre on Wednesday 1st, 8th, 15th & 29th March.

The Butler final is scheduled for 1st & 2nd April at the Victorian Bridge Centre.

The final event to select the Victorian Open Team will be held on 15th & 16th April, at the Victorian Bridge Centre, where all finalists will come together for a 2 day knockout IMP teams’ competition.

Victorian Womens & Seniors Team Selection

The selection process comprises 2 stages – preliminary and final.  The representatives of each of the three regions automatically qualify for the finals.

The qualifying stage is being held online on Real Bridge on Monday’s 20th & 27th March and 3rd April, with the final being held at the Victorian Bridge Centre on 22nd & 23rd April.

    Youth Team

Depending on availability of youth players this team will be selected either  by the Youth Committee, who recommends the team to the VBA Council, or a qualifying event which will be held on the same weekend as the Women’s and Seniors’ Team Selection final.

All successful teams receive a travel subsidy from Bridge Victoria.  The amount of the subsidy is set closer to the event by the Council.  All entry fees are paid by Bridge Victoria

For more detailed information about the selection process please refer to the VBA Team selection Policy August 2018.
