  • Victorians to the Fore in National Team Trials

The 2022 Australian Team Trials have been conducted in Canberra over the past several days and I am delighted to advise that, as has been the case all year in major events, Victorian players featured prominently.

Perhaps the stand-out Victorian performance was that of VBA Vice-President Jenny Thompson and her longstanding partner Eva Caplan, who topped the qualifying for the Women’s Team and won the Lidia Beech Trophy in the process. Almost equalling their feats were Neil Ewart (paired with Canberra expert Ian Robinson) and evergreens Bob Gallus and Stephen Weisz who qualified second and third respectively in the Seniors, thus joining the ladies in making the national team.

Commiserations to Ben Thompson and Justin Mill who narrowly missed qualifying for the Open Team with their respective partners, Renee Cooper (WA) and Tony Leibowitz (NSW). The same sentiments go to Victorian Senior players who missed out: Geoff Johnson and Alan Race, Chris Hughes (paired with Kim Morrison (NSW)) and Victorian Open representatives Simon Hinge and Stephen Lester.

The excellent performance of all the Victorians bodes well for the health of our high-level bridge and warm congratulations to all participants, especially those who qualified for our national teams.

    – Christopher Leach.
